Common Emergencies We Fix

The most common electrical emergencies we attend across Liverpool homes.

Complete Power Loss

Your whole house has lost power. Could be a tripped main switch, a faulty RCD, or a supply issue. We diagnose and fix the cause quickly.

⏱ 15–60 minutes

Tripping Switches / RCD Problems

A circuit breaker or RCD that keeps tripping is one of the most common emergencies we attend. The cause is usually a fault on a circuit, not the switch itself.

⏱ 30–60 minutes

Burning Smell from Electrics

A burning or fishy smell is a sign of overheating wiring or components. Turn off your main switch immediately and call us.

⏱ 45–90 minutes

Partial Power Loss

Some rooms working and others not? This usually indicates a problem with a specific circuit or a tripped individual breaker.

⏱ 10–45 minutes

Fuse Box / Consumer Unit Problems

Damaged, old, or faulty consumer units are a significant safety risk. We carry spare consumer units on board and can replace yours the same day.

⏱ 60–180 minutes

Sparks, Buzzing or Flickering

Sparks from sockets, buzzing from the consumer unit, or persistent flickering lights all indicate a fault needing immediate professional attention.

⏱ 30–60 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our emergency electrician service.

An emergency electrician is also known as an out of hours electrician, a 24 hour electrician and an emergency response electrician. We are on standby all day and night to attend to your urgent electrical problems. Whether it is a complete power failure, a burning smell, tripping switches, or exposed wiring, we have the knowledge, experience, and test equipment to diagnose the problem quickly and carry out safe repairs.

We aim to attend all emergencies within 2 hours depending on the severity and electrician availability. Our record response time is just 8 minutes. We will listen to your problem on the phone, discuss how quickly we should attend, and give you an honest ETA. Once booked, you will receive a text when we are on the way and a Google Maps tracking link.

Our weekday emergency call out (Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00) costs £120 for the first hour including circuit testing and visual inspection. Out of hours, weekends and bank holidays cost £180 for the first hour. Most problems are resolved within the first hour. If further work is needed, we will always provide a clear written quote before proceeding.

We cover Liverpool across to Leigh and all areas in between. This includes Aigburth, Allerton, Anfield, Bootle, Childwall, Crosby, Croxteth, Everton, Garston, Gateacre, Huyton, Kirkby, Kirkdale, Knotty Ash, Mossley Hill, Norris Green, Old Swan, Speke, St Helens, Tuebrook, Walton, Warrington, Wavertree, West Derby, Widnes, and Woolton.

During normal working hours, yes — we are always happy to have a chat. Out of hours, we will answer the phone but only to arrange attendance. During the booking process, we will talk you through what steps to take to make your electrical system safe until we arrive.

If the problem can wait, we can arrange to attend within a few days at a mutually convenient time. We will always be honest about whether an emergency visit is actually necessary. There is no point paying an emergency rate if the issue can safely wait.

If you feel there is danger such as fire or smoke, please call 999. For power cuts affecting your whole street, call 105 (free) to report to your network operator. For faults within your own property, call us on 0151 351 4011.

Yes. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of house fires in the UK. Warning signs include frequently tripping switches, flickering lights, burning smells, warm or discoloured sockets, and sparks when plugging in. Liverpool has many older properties with aging wiring. If you notice any of these signs, do not ignore them.

Our out of hours rate (evenings after 17:00, weekends and bank holidays) is £180 for the first hour. Weekday daytime emergencies are £120 for the first hour. Both include circuit testing and visual inspection. No hidden fees — we always quote before starting additional work.

What to Expect from Your Emergency Visit

What should I do before your emergency electrician arrives

What Should I Do Before You Arrive?

Clear access to your consumer unit or fuse box is essential — so please take all the coats, shoes, and Christmas decorations out of that cupboard!

If there is a problem with your sockets, we will likely need access to every socket in your home. If you can make good, clear access then we will work much quicker. If you cannot clear every socket, do not worry — we may be able to work around that.

If you smell burning, please turn off the main switch (if safe to do so) and keep everyone away from the area until we arrive.

Is There Anything That Cannot Be Fixed?

In general, no. There is nothing that cannot be fixed or repaired in some way. No matter what has happened, there is a way to repair or replace the affected components.

The most important thing: do not worry. We carry a range of spare parts including circuit breakers, RCDs, cable, connectors, and even complete consumer units — meaning we can repair or replace almost any situation on the first visit.

Will You Leave Us Without Power?

Where an installation is too damaged to leave connected, we may have to disconnect it to make it safe. These circumstances are rare but do occasionally happen.

If the consumer unit is badly damaged, we have several options: replace it straight away, install a temporary consumer unit, or safely isolate just the affected circuits.

If you need to involve your home insurance, we can install temporary power supplies for essential appliances while the process takes place.

We aim to attend all emergencies within 2 hours. Our record response time is just 8 minutes.

Electrical Fire Risks

Faulty electrical installations are a leading cause of house fires. Liverpool has many older properties where wiring may not have been inspected for years.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Frequently tripping fuses or circuit breakers
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Burning smell with no obvious source
  • Warm or discoloured sockets
  • Sparks when plugging in appliances
  • Crackling or buzzing from the consumer unit

An electrical safety inspection (EICR) is the best way to identify hidden risks before they become emergencies.

Why Is My Power Out?

Only Your House Is Affected

If your neighbours still have power and street lights are on, the problem is within your property. Common causes include a tripped RCD, a faulty appliance, an overloaded circuit, or a prepayment meter that has run out of credit.

Your Whole Street Is Affected

If your neighbours have also lost power, this is likely a supply issue and NOT a fault in your home. Report it to 105 (freephone) or check with your network operator. Quick tip: look at your neighbours' lights and the street lights to tell the difference.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you smell burning: Turn off the main power if safe to do so, get everyone out, and call us. If you see flames, call 999 first.

Never: Touch exposed wires, use water on electrical fires, attempt DIY repairs on live circuits, or ignore burning smells.

Our Fault Finding Process

We are specialist fault finding electricians. Here is how we track down electrical problems.

Visual Inspection

Check consumer unit, sockets, switches and fittings for obvious damage, burn marks, or wear.

Circuit Isolation

Turn off all circuits and test one by one to identify exactly which circuit is causing the problem.

Meter Testing

Using professional equipment, we check voltage, continuity, and insulation resistance to pinpoint the fault.

Problem Found

We explain in plain English, provide a written quote, and fix it — often on the same visit.
